The following is what each party will have to bring to the DMV to do the tag switch:
Buyer Pays transfer fees for BOTH the seller and buyer, on average it is about $120.00 unless there are liens on the vehicles involved.
SELLER:
1. Title to the car that you have the tag on.
2. Insurance Card to the same vehicle.
3. Current Mileage of the same vehicle.
4. Driver's License
5. License Plate that you are selling.
BUYER:
1. Title to the car that you have the tag on.
2. Insurance Card to the same vehicle.
3. Current Mileage of the same vehicle.
4. Driver's License
5. License Plate that you are switching.
6. Check or Cash to pay DMV transfer fees, on average about $120.00. Extra $20.00 if there is a lien on the vehicle.
NOTE:
If you have a vehicle that is leased or has a lien on it you will have to request that your title be sent to the DMV to be able to do the tag switch. This process can take as little as a week to complete to at times it has taken almost two months. The more persistant you are the quicker you get your title. You need to do the following:
1. Go to the DMV where you will be doing the tag transfer and ask at the front desk for the form required to request your title to do a tag switch on a vehicle that is leased or financed.
2. Fill out the form completely and call the finance company and ask for the fax number to send the form over to. When you talk to the finance company ask them to overnight the title to the DMV.
3. Call the finance company a few days later and verify that they have sent out the original title not a copy.
4. Call again and make sure they sent it out.
5. Once the DMV has received the title they will send out a post card to let you know they have received it. If the bank has said that they have sent it out and it has been over a week try calling the DMV and see if they have received it. The post cards can sometimes get lost in the mail.
6. Once you confirm that the title is at DMV, call us to schedule a time to do the tag switch.
